ASA Milwaukee County Softball Headline June 9, 2006

Victory #1 For The Famers

Victory #1 for the Famers didn’t come easy, but they are off to their best start in one years after a 12-10 victory at KK Park yesterday. After an embarrassing 0-4 start, some local softball professionals were wondering if Famers was a typo, and it should have read Flamers. No one is sure to this day, but these boys are on a tear. It was Big Chris “Twinkle Toes” Roloff’s solo shot in the top of the 5th that sealed the deal against an upstart Club Paragon. He seemed to be a little light in his Loafers, but I guess his recent tap dancing lessons have finally paid off. The defensive effort by our left infield, otherwise known as Ace and Gary (The Ambiguously Gay Duo) was again tops in the league. Lonnie “Ace” Klecker was involved in four double plays and almost 7 butt slaps! I had a chance to meet up with the duo after the game….

AP: “Ace, (Lonnie) another solid effort for you today, what drives you?”

Ace: “Well, to be honest with you it’s the after party at the Blue Oyster with my partner Gary (Jeremy). Also, Gary never forgets to give me a good pounding if I commit any errors.”

AP: “How hard?”

Ace: “It’s not how hard, it’s the depth. He lets me have it if I have a bad night between the plates.”

****INJURY REPORT

Danny G, after a full out splits at first base, received a slight testicle tear but is expected to play next week. We will keep you posted as to his progress. His children are in good hands, with our trainer Adam Etrheim of Trademark Development.

Good news fellas. I spoke to Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett this morning. He heard of both Billy Hall’s game winning dong yesterday and the Hall of Famers first victory yesterday. He has declared June 8th officially Billy Hall Day!

It has too many big words. — A report on Slaugherhouse 5

Slaughterhouse Five

By: Kurt Vonnegut

Ashley Viator

January 23, 2006

I found the book Slaughterhouse Five to be very confusing and boring. It is probably the most difficult book I have ever read, and I love to read! I did not like how it jumped around from one time period to another. I also think it had too many different genres for me to follow making it very confusing.

So much of this book just seems to be so far fetched. For instance, the main character Billy Pilgrim was going to school to be an Optometrist and then he got drafted. He went to Europe during the Battle of the Bulge and became a Prisoner of war in Germany. Billy and some other Americans were sent a Russian camp and then on to Dresden, which is a beautiful city in Germany. In February 1945 Dresden was bombed killing over 130,000 people except for Billy and the other P.O.W.’s because they were hiding out in a meat cellar (slaughterhouse). After the bombing, Billy along with the other P.O.W.’s stayed in a stable for a while until some Russians came and got them to help clean up all the dead bodies. When they are finished doing that Billy was sent back home to New York.

Billy experienced a lot of death in his life, which I thought was very sad. His father died just before he went off to fight the war. When he was in Dresden he was one of very few survivors of the bombing that killed over 130,000 people and his wife Valencia died from Carbon Monoxide poisoning when she was on her way to visit him after he was in a plane crash. I think it is very strange how he experienced so much death around him, and came so close to death himself, but he always survived it. I think this is one of the things that make this book far fetched.

I think it was ridiculous when they talked about the ‘Tralfamadorians’. Who would ever really believe in aliens that are two-feet tall and look like upside down toilet plungers who take Billy in their flying saucer to their home planet? This part of the book was too much like science fiction for me. This is a perfect example of two many different genres in one book. At one point it gives you a message that it is an anti-war story, and the next minute it talks about these strange alien creatures making it like science fiction! I can’t figure out if all of this is an effect of his mental breakdown or if he is hallucinating. Confusing!!!

The phrase ‘so it goes’ is used quite often in the book and it always seems to be used after a character dies. I’m not quite sure why this is, but I think it is saying that death is a part of life so just learn to deal with it!

I think that Kurt Vonnegut is comparing what he writes about in Slaughterhouse Five to his own life and experiences in the war. I think that several of the things mentioned have different meanings, like the bird that sings “Poo-tee-weet”. What is Vonnegut trying to say with this? Is it supposed to bring peace to Billy after everything he’s been through?

I honestly can’t say that I would recommend this book to anyone, especially anyone in the lower grades. I’m glad I didn’t have to read it before now. It has a lot of strong language, which I really don’t think is necessary, and I found it to be very depressing at times. When I was struggling through this book, I was wishing that our summer reading books could be our own choice. If that were the case, I would have probably chosen something from The Chronicles of Narnia, Lord of the Rings, or Harry Potter. I know that these books can be far fetched also, but at least they are enjoyable to read.

I think the plot jumps around too much, I don’t think there was any climax but it does give a very strong opinion about the war. It makes me think that Kurt Vonnegut is anti-war. It must have been very difficult for him to have to go fight the war feeling so strongly against it.

I think that the two choices of books that we had to read this year are so very different. I don’t think I can find anything even similar between the two. I really didn’t mind the Crucible; I found that much easier to read than this book. Maybe because it is more of a script, it made it easier to read, but I also like the story behind that book.

Here’s an Irony

Filed under: Uncategorized - Administrator @ 5:50 am

I’ve started this blog as a place to post email that has come to me due to others passing out my email address as their own. I unfortunately deleted some of the better ones before I came up with this special use.

But as the volume of this misdirected email increases, I’m considering a new way to manage them. To my friends I pass out my personal domain name address. These are then redirected to gmail by my registrar.

It turns out email sent to me is not addressed to Aviator at all. So I’m thinking of setting up a filter so anything sent to Aviator is tagged and archived right away without me even seeing it.

Sad. I have this cool email address, and won’t use it. In fact filter away stuff sent there due to “high crap” probability.
